A Writer’s Rant

This story/world has gotten out of control, but you—the reader—will be the benefactor of the out-of-controlness. Since you get to enjoy the ever-expanding world and story that I’m working on, you also get to enjoy this rant about it.

When I first started the writing process for this project, it was going to be a single book. ONE. BOOK. That’s it. I was in my early 20s and still feeling some of the self-consciousness from my teens. I was scared of making the story too complicated, because I thought it would mean I was being “too much.” Basically, I wanted to ignore my natural tendency to be detailed and dive into things. I was scared of getting too deep into worldbuilding, character development, and story planning and never finishing so I was determined to just do one book.

Then I realized that I had too much story material for a single book. And it would make me sad to do so much worldbuilding and character development to be done in one book. So I switched to TWO books—not three, never three because EVERYONE does trilogies. So I’ll do a “DUology.”

THEN I finally was like there’s way too much going on so I guess I’ll give in and finally go for the trilogy. FINE. I give up. Maybe now I can finally finish book 1!

Much much later…I suddenly had the thought to make this story MULTI-GENERATIONAL, which would mean possibly a SIX BOOK series??? AND somewhere around there I had the idea to write a prequel short story to prove to myself I could finish SOMETHING.

Finishing one prequel has since led to writing more short stories about different characters in this world. Book 1 is still in process, but extremely delayed as you can see. In the mean time, I’m using the short stories/novellas, etc. to color in the world of Farsang.

Throughout this fourteen year process—yep, you “heard” that right—I have gotten so frustrated with the evolution of this story, but I also feel a sense of satisfaction as things naturally progress.

Just today, I was working on another short story, and I finally admitted to myself/realized that I still have way too much stuff going on in Book 1. But the good news is I’ve realized the natural story arc for Book 1.

Moral of the story? I’ll let you know when I figure it out.

The Joy of the Writing Process

In the opposite spirit of my last post, I must admit I have also deeply enjoyed the writing process of the last 14 years. It’s definitely...
